One Line Summary

Abstract

In the embedded space, general purpose Linux distributions have difficulty supporting embedded hardware. Often this is due to the absence of standard firmware interfaces and behaviour required to boot and install an OS. This isn’t a problem when the OS is custom built for the hardware, but there are many cases where using an existing distribution would simplify development and maintenance of the final system.

As part of an effort to improve distribution support for embedded platforms, ARM is drafting a new specification called Embedded Base Boot Requirements to document the required firmware core functionality and behaviour on ARM platforms to be supportable by Distributions. This BoF will provide an overview of the current EBBR draft and collect feedback from Linux and distro engineers. ARM is collecting this feedback to make sure the document is realistic and useful to embedded Linux developers.
