Abstract

A few years ago Arjan Van de Ven presented a talk about the goal of booting Linux systems in 5s. Today, we can achieve this with standard off-the-shelf hardware and mainstream distributions. This session will include a demo how to boot a comprehensive GNOME desktop within 5s, without any special hacks. We will look at the various components involved including the hardware, the BIOS, boot loader, kernel, initrd and init system, and what has improved over the past years to make this possible.

Biography

Harald Hoyer joined the Linux community in 1996. His first kernel patch was the module ip_masq_quake in 1997, followed by boot support for md raid devices. He joined Red Hat in July of 1999, working on projects ranging from udev, network daemons and CD recording packages to creating configuration tools, extending smolt and writing python interfaces. Lately he created a cross distribution initramfs generator called dracut.
