Embedded platform mainlining: benefits, obstacles and examples

*

One Line Summary

Embedded platforms mainlining problems and their possible solutions.

Abstract

Embedded platforms as well as devices running Linux are rarely supported by the mainline kernel and upstream distributions. And, although the benefits of being in the mainline were described by numerous presentations and articles, the device manufacturers still prefer to invent their own Linux based wheel.
It happens because of different technical and less technical problems and obstacles that overweight mainlining benefits from the device manufacturers point of view.

The discussion should help the embedded developers to keep in pace with the mainline and ship a working product at the same time.
